Tribulation (Fitnah) in Damascus

The tribulation in Sham will calm down on the one hand, and flare up again on another. This corruption will not end until an angel from the sky calls: “The Mahdi is your leader. The Mahdi is your caliph.” (Resalatul huruj ul-Mahdi, p. 63)

It appears from the hadith that there will be terrible chaos in the region of Sham before the appearance of the Mahdi, who will be with the Prophet Jesus on Earth. Reference is being made here to the chaos developing in Syria.

As we know, however, the region of Sham is not limited to the Syrian capital itself. As has been mentioned previously, the word “Sham” in Arabic means “the left” and used to refer to those countries to the left of the region of Hijaz (the region containing the cities of Mecca and Medina).

By the beginning of the last century, civil wars, rebellions, conflicts and great wars raged in this region. These conflicts triggered one another, and all the people living on these lands were greatly influenced by them. The statement of the hadith, “The corruption… will calm down on the one hand, and flare up again on another”, is noteworthy in this regard. In the last fifty years, the major events that occurred in the region were the following:

  • Suez War
  • Six Days Wars Yom Kippur War
  • Lebanon Civil War
  • Conflicts and tensions going on the lands of Palestine.
