In a then Der Spiegel story
about the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, it
is stated that Russia is willing to pursue economic
interests in the region, even if she terminates
the invasion. The then natural gas reserves
of the country amounting to 150 billion cubic
metres has a great share in this. Besides, the
rich coal, lead, zinc, silver, gold mines and
the world’s richest lapis mines explain this
insistent attitude of Russia.
